Instructor

Born and raised in Hong Kong, May Ip was introduced to international folk dance at age 10 and fell in love with it instantly. As a youth, she has participated in folk dance festivals and won numerous awards. Her passion in dance has lead her to also study modern ballet and Jazz. May has performed with elite companies including Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, Inspired Dance Company and Owen Sound Little Theatre.

A resident of Grey-Bruce Ontario, Canada since 1995, May currently lives in Owen Sound with her husband and 3 children. She founded Grey Bruce International Folk Dancers in 2012 and has been working with the group since then developing leadership and instructor skills in each individual, enabling the group to facilitate folk dance workshops and events. She has led workshop for Ignite! Youth Arts Festival, been instructing classes in elementary schools and at Family Y, and working with Sandcastle Theatre as music director and choreographer. Her goal is to help build a healthy community through promoting international folk dance among all ages.

Recipient of Bluewater District School Board 2013-14 Award of Excellence and Cultural Catalyst Award of 2017 Owen Sound Cultural Awards , May is an active volunteer in schools and community, inspiring all ages in music and dance, encouraging students to identify and develop their potentials. She has also spearheaded Chinese in Grey Bruce Research Project.
